COMMERCE BUSINESS DAILY ISSUE OF AUGUST 25,1995 PSA#1418Commander, Naval Air Systems Command, Code AIR-21635Y, Washington, DC
20361-2160 17 -- DEVELOPMENT OF SEA-BASED LAUNCHING SYSTEMS POC Contact, Beth
Yancey, Phone (703)604-2119 The Naval Air Systems command solicits
information on non-steam technologies applicable to the launching of
aircraft from sea-based platforms. The Navy has developed or deployed
shipboard launch systems (catapults) utilizing compressed air,
hydraulic fluid, and internal combustion (fuel/air/water) power
sources. The current generation of catapults are powered by steam
derived from the ships propulsion plant. The Navy is developing
electromagnetic launch technologies for a possible alternative
launch/launch assist system. In an effort to expand the applicable
technology base, NAVAIR is seeking information on possible non-steam
technologies which could be utilized in an advanced catapult
development program. Technologies must result in catapults capable of
launching the current inventory of carrier aircraft (700,000,000. foot
pounds of energy applied over 300 feet); providing launch assist for
future aircraft (JAST) (variable 20,000,000. foot pounds of energy
applied over 150 feet); and be adaptable to platforms other than
traditional aircraft carriers. Technologies should be sufficiently
mature to initiate an Advanced Development Program in 1998,
transitioning to Engineering and Manufacturing Development in 2002 and
production to support a 2008 ship procurement. The Naval Air Systems
Command will host an informational meeting on 14 September 1995 at 1300
in Room 1224, Jefferson Plaza 2, 1421 Jefferson Davis Highway,
Arlington, VA to discuss this requirement and solicit ''white papers''
addressing applicable technologies by 15 October 1995. Attendees
should submit clearance information by mail to the Naval Air Systems
Command, 1421 Jefferson Davis Hwy., Attn: AIR-7.4, Arlington, VA
22243-5120 or fax to (703) 604-3770 not later than 5 September 1995.
Representatives from foreign companies must follow the security
procedures for clearance through their embassy and have this
information forwarded to the NAVAIR security office (703) 604-4052 and
the AIR-7.4 office above in order to gain access to the Jefferson
Plaza building. See note No. 22 - NAVAIR Synopsis No. 60046-95. (0235) Loren Data Corp. http://www.ld.com (SYN# 0124 19950824\17-0004.SOL)
