ANNOUNCEMENT/DEFENSE WOMEN'S HEALTH RESEARCH PROGRAM {administrative
details} - Approximately $20 million is available for extramural
research efforts on issues of importance to the health and performance
of servicewomen. A Broad Agency Announcement concerning this program
will be available in approximately 15 days. Proposals will be sought in
four broad research areas: 1) Operational Effectiveness for Mission
Accomplishment; 2) Health Promotion and Disease Prevention; 3)
Psychological Research Problems; 4) Access to and Delivery of Health
Care. Proposed research relevant to these areas should focus on issues
that are: 1) unique to military women; 2) especially prevalent among
military women; or 3) related to the ability of military women to
perform their mission responsibilities. Specific areas of interest
include: reproductive health; surveys of operational medical
practitioners; multi-situational elimination devices for body wastes;
environmental stressors; physical standards linked to occupations;
clothing and equipment; drug metabolism and effects; prevention of
musculoskeletal injuries related to military jobs and training;
prevention of vaginitis, cystitis, urinary tract infections, STDs, and
bladder and uterine prolapse; aging; effectiveness of smoking
cessation and drug treatment programs; methods of health education;
prevalence of disordered eating and its relationship to military
fitness standards; combat stress reactions; impact of family issues;
integration of women into a hierarchical male environment; training of
medical personnel in gynecologic and reproductive health;
accessibility of direct medical care; and utilization of civilian
medical care. Military-civilian collaborations are encouraged. To
