COMMERCE BUSINESS DAILY ISSUE OF SEPTEMBER 7,1995 PSA#1426SAN ANTONIO AIR LOGISTICS CENTER INDUSTRY DAYS BRAC-95 recommended
Kelly AFB and the San Antonio Air Logistics Center (SA-ALC) for
realignment and consolidation of workloads to other DoD depots or to
private sector commercial activities. As a result, the SA-ALC is
sponsoring ``Industry Days'' scheduled for 14-15 October. Briefings by
the Air Force, the City of San Antonio and scheduled facilities tours
will allow interested parties to familiarize themselves with the base,
its mission, and the industrial capabilities of the Center. Various
possible acquisition strategies and workload combinations will be
discussed and industry feedback welcomed. Potential participants must
respond with written correspondence to Mr. Jim Powell, SA-ALC/PKXP, 143
Billy Mitchell Blvd. Ste 1, Kelly AFB, TX 78241-6014 by 20 Sep 95
indicating affiliation, names of attendees (not to exceed 5) and areas
to be toured. The areas open for tours are briefly described below:
LA. The tour of the C-5 Galaxy Aircraft Repair Facility encompasses a
600 thousand SF aircraft overhaul facility and 350 thousand SF of
backshop support for the repair, overhaul, and modification of the
entire C-5 fleet. LP - The tour of Engine Production Division will
include five buildings demonstrating state-of-the-art technologies and
processes dedicated to the comprehensive overhaul, repair,
intermediate maintenance, and testing of F100, TF39 and T56 engines for
the Air Force and Navy. Advanced technologies support modern cleaning,
inspection, welding, thermal spray, machining, and other associated
repair processes. Infrastructure includes more than 1.2 million SF of
production floorspace including advanced plating, support, heat treat,
and jet engine test facilities. LD - The tour of the Aerospace
Equipment Management Directorate will include seven buildings where
depot maintenance overhaul, repair and test are accomplished on:
electronics items, automatic test equipment, F-15 SPS, F-16 ESS, gas
turbine engines, aircraft air turbine starters, engine valves, pumps
and controls, engine fuel controls and nozzles, engine fuel accessories
and PME calibration. TI - The tour of the Technology and Industrial
Support Directorate will include the following four areas: (1) The
Kelly Science and Engineering Laboratory performs chemical,
environmental, dimensional and failure analysis, and non-destructive
testing of aerospace components as well as controlling related
industrial processes and supporting customers within and outside Kelly
AFB. (2) The Machine Shop is a modern 147 thousand SF facility
consisting of conventional and CNC lathes, mills (through 5-axis), jig
bores and EDM machines as well as administrative areas. The Foundry
Rubber Products is a 17 thousand SF facility specializing in the
manufacture and reconditioning of rubber components on aircraft, and
engines used for propulsion and auxiliary power. (3) Plant Management
provides services to the industrial complex which includes the
installation and repair of industrial plant equipment and industrial
systems. (4) The Software Division develops, maintains and distributes
embedded computer software on automatic test equipment and automated
operational flight programs. DLA - The tour of the Defense Distribution
Depot will showcase the largest DoD distribution complex west of the
Mississippi. The tour will include a briefing and details on the
receiving, storage and transportation functions. 4 million gross SF of
storage available in 31 buildings and also 75 acres of outside
storage. NW - The work consists of two major areas. Test and repair of
nuclear related electronic assemblies/components, test sets and
smaller quantities of mechanical/electromechanical items and nuclear
hardened cables. Testing of samples of re-entry vehicle
assemblies/components followed by test result analysis to support
reliability assessment. Registration is on a first-come first-serve
basis as logistical constraints and security concerns require
attendance to be limited. Kelly AFB has established a home page on the
World Wide Web addressed http.www.kelly-afb.texas.net at which
additional information can be obtained. Participants may also wish to
register on-line. Direct further inquiries to Jim Powell at
