The scope of work will require the vendor to provide an electron microprobe X-ray analyzer (EMP) capable of elemental analyses in concentrations ranging from 100 weight percent to tens of parts per million in sample volumes on the order of several cubic microns. The required system shall be digitally controlled and completely automated. It shall be equipped with a highly stable electron gun and column (beam current stability less than or equal to 0.1 percent per hour without beam regulation); beam regulation; a large, optically encoded, motorized specimen stage with autofocusing capability; an optical microscope and color CCD camera; three wavelength dispersive X-ray spectrometers (WDS); an energy dispersive X-ray spectrometer (EDS); an automated vacuum system; an airlock for introducing specimens into the system quickly and easily; a multi-tasking computer that operates the completely integrated system as well as both processing and storing data; display terminals; and color and black/white hard copy output devices. The system shall be capable of qualitative and quantitative analyses, X-ray intensity and quantitative line profiles, and secondary electron, backscattered electron, and X-ray images.
