A -- COMPARATIVE ANALYSIS OF QUANTUM COMPUTER IMPLEMENTATIONS Sol. DAAH04-96-R-BAA1 (supplement). Due 120895. Contact, Dr. Henry O. Everitt, 919-549-4369. The Physics Division of the U.S. Army Research Office, (ARO, 4300 S. Miami Blvd., P. O. Box 1211, Research Triangle Park, NC 27709-2211) solicits proposals for comparative analytic studies of the possible physical realizations of quantum computers. These studies should compare and contrast various designs and utilizations of quantum bits, the fundamental building blocks of a quantum computer, and logic operations involving quantum bits. The ultimate objective will be to identify the most promising experimental implementation of quantum bits. These comparative studies may be theoretical or experimental in nature and may explore new or previously proposed technologies. Proposals may concentrate within a given discipline such as ``atomic physics,'' ``optical physics,'' or ``solid state physics'' or may be cross-disciplinary. All studies should be tied to specific computational architectures. Several awards are anticipated, and a total of $750,000 is available for this one-year project. This announcement augments the Nanotechnology Thrust of the Physics Division program in the ARO BAA of October 1995 which explicitly solicits proposals ``exploring the fundamentals of quantum computation.'' Lead investigators must be U.S. citizens. White papers no more than 10 pages in the length outlining the proposed project and a budget estimate should be received at ARO, ATTN: AMRXO-PH (H. Everitt) no later than 3:00 PM EST December 8, 1995. Full proposals of no more than 40 pages will be requested from the proposers who submit the most meritorious white papers. Proposals submitted to ARO, ATTN: AMXRO-ICA, must be received no later than 3:00 PM EST, March 7, 1996. Proposals must be submitted and will be evaluated in accordance with the ARO BAA which may be obtained from ARO, ATTN: AMXRO-PR. Proceedings from a recent ARO-sponsored workshop entitled ``Quantum Cryptography and Quantum Computing'' may be obtained from ARO or by anonymous ftp to the file ``qcproc.txt'' in the PH directory of aro-emhl.army.mil. The point of contact for this solicitation is Dr. Henry Everitt, (919) 549-4369, email@aro-emhl.army.mil. (279)
