COMMERCE BUSINESS DAILY ISSUE OF OCTOBER 19,1995 PSA#1455U.S. Department of Energy, Oak Ridge Operations Office, Procurement and
Contracts Division, P.O. Box 2001, Oak Ridge, TN 37831-8658 A -- PILOT-SCALE DEMONSTRATION OF TREATMENT ON ACTUAL DOE MIXED
LOW-LEVEL WASTE USING THE CATALYTIC EXTRACTION PROCESS POC Contact
Point, Mary Berry (423) 576-8217; Contracting Officer, Robert French
(423) 576-4849 The Department of Energy Oak Ridge Operations Office
(ORO) anticipates awarding a follow-on sole source contract for
demonstration of the Catalytic Extraction Process (CEP) as applied to
radioactive materials for the treatment of DOE mixed low-level waste
(MLLW) with M4 Environmental, L.P. (M4). The CEP technology employs the
catalytic and solvent properties of molten metal to break down wastes
to their elements, and subsequently, to waste forms suitable for
disposal or reuse. Follow-on activities in the proposed sole source
contract constitute the next step in the evolutionary cycle of the CEP
process as it transitions from radioactive surrogate work funded
through a previous contract to processing of actual DOE MLLW. ORO will
provide sufficient quantities of waste to demonstrate the operational
reliability, safety, and cost-effectiveness of the CEP technology.
Candidate MLLW streams to be provided for the demonstration include
aqueous organics and soil/debris. This sole source is focused on the
evaluation of the molten metal treatment process, product reuse, and
cost-effectiveness. This is not a request for proposals. See Numbered
