COMMERCE BUSINESS DAILY ISSUE OF NOVEMBER 13,1995 PSA#1471SAF/AQ ANNOUNCES `HOME PAGE' ON THE WORLD WIDE WEB On 22 September
1995, Air Force Acquisition (SAF/AQ) debuted on the ``information
superhighway'' with a World Wide Web ``Home Page.'' The SAF/AQ WWW page
is the starting point for accessing a wide variety of information
pertinent to the acquisition community. It includes such tropical areas
as: Acquisition Reform, including Lightning Bolt updates and the
monthly newsletter. Acquisition Policy. Budget and Congressional.
Contracting, including opportunities, acquisition regs, and policy.
Technology. Engineering, Industrial, and Environmental Policy. SAF/AQ
plans to use their World Wide Web site to communicate with subordinate
organizations, other agencies, interested business entities, and with
the general public. The WWW will help to alleviate the problems
normally associated with distributing large amounts of information.
Initially, the SAF/AQ WWW page will have only a small fraction of the
eventual content. All information will initially be publicly
releasable. Sometime in the future, as additional information is added,
certain parts of the page will be accessible only to appropriate
audiences. Because of the dynamic nature of the page, interested users
are encouraged to visit often. The World Wide Web is essentially a
graphical front end interface to the Internet. The Web is based on
hypertext, with the notion that from one piece of information you
should be able to jump directly to something related. It allows users
to easily navigate and find information by simply clicking on a word or
graphic. Web pages are electronic documents that have been enhanced
with hypertext codes. The codes tell your computer how to get to
related material, which may be located halfway around the world. The
codes are readable by a ``browser'' such as Lynx, Netscape or Mosaic.
The growth of the Web has been explosive. Leading experts estimate
there are approximately 30 million users on the Internet today, with
nearly 8-10 million of those users reaching the Web. SAF/AQ plans to
use this powerful technology to deliver an unprecedented and powerful
combination of openness and security, intuitive access to highly
graphical information, and flexibility for customization. This
announcement is only the first step of greater things to come. Anyone
interested in the SAF/AQ WWW page can visit it at Uniform Resource
Locator (URL) ``http://www.safaq.hq.af.mil/SAFAQ/''. If you have any
