internet mail). NOAA, in support of agreements with the U.S. Agency for
International Development, intends to award a contract to the
University of Washington's School of Fisheries and Center for
Quantitative Science/Renewable Resource Consultants and Management
Assistance for Artisanal Fisheries. Under the contract, the University
would assist in developing sampling strategies and overseeing field
collection of data, entry into appropriate management information
systems, design of systems as applicable to Nicaragua, and interpreting
all such assimlated data and creating initial assessments of stocks of
lobster, shrimp, reef fish, and lagoon fisheries. Further, the
contractor will provide training for Nicaraguan fisheries managers in
techniques of stock assessment as applied to tropical multispecies
fisheries. Work will be conducted in Nicaragua's Miskito Coast Marine
Reserve. The University is considered the only organization capable of
conducting the work and completing the project by August 1996. The
work will utilize and supplement findings developed in a 9 year
Collaborative Research Program in which the University played a
critical role. The work will also parallel similar work recently
