JAPAN: MOTOR VEHICLES The following notification is being circulated in accordance with Article 10.6. G/TBT/Notif. 95.310. 1. Member to Agreement notifying: JAPAN. If applicable, name of local government involved (Articles 3.2 and 7.2): 2. Agency responsible: Ministry of Transport. 3. Notified under Article 2.9.2. 4. Products covered (HS or CCCN where applicable, otherwise national tariff heading. ICS numbers may be provided in addition, where applicable): Motor vehicles (HS: 87.01-05). 5. Title and number of pages of the notified document: Revision of the Safety Regulations for Road Vehicles (available in English, 2 pages). 6. Description of content: This proposal amends exhaust emission standards for diesel-powered passenger cars and light-duty, medium-duty and heavy-duty vehicles. 7. Objective and rationale: To reduce the air pollution. 8. Relevant documents: The basic law is the Safety Regulations for Road Vehicles. The said amendment will appear in ``KAMPO'' (Official Government Gazette) when adopted. 9. Proposed date of adoption and entry into force: 16 October 1995. (1) Adoption: January 1996. (2) Entry into force: (a) passenger cars (vehicle weight no more than 1,265 kg.), light-duty vehicles (gross vehicle weight no more than 1.7 t.), middle-duty vehicle with manual transmission (gross vehicle weight over 1.7 t. and no more than 2.5 t.), heavy-duty vehicles (gross vehicle weight over 2.5 t. and no more than 3.5 t.): October 1997 at earliest (domestic vehicles); April 2000 at earliest (imported vehicles); (b) passenger cars (vehicle weight over 1,265 kg.), middle-duty vehicles with automatic transmission (gross vehicle weight over 1.7 t. and no more than 2.5 t), heavy-duty vehicles (gross vehicle weight over 3.5 t. and no more than 12 t.): October 1998 at earliest (domestic vehicles): April 2000 at earliest (imported vehicles). 10.
