The Gemini 8-m Telescopes Project is seeking qualified firms to manufacture, build and test two (2) Cassegrain Rotators (including Cassegrain Cable Wrap) for the Gemini 8-m Telescopes. A brief description of the system is given below. The manufacture of the Cassegrain Rotator and Cassegrain Cable Wrap will require fabrication or casting of large steel structures (approx 1500 Kilograms), and stress relieving and precision machining the same. The design will utilize a large diameter bearing (1.7 meters) for the rotator and a segmented curved track for the wrap (3 meters diameter). The drives for each system are to be provided by precision gear drives driven by multiple brushless DC servo motors/digital amplifiers controlled by a multi-axis PMAC controller. Testing of the systems will include ensuring that precision tracking is achieved and maintained under simulated operational conditions and loads. Two (2) complete systems are required. The Gemini 8-m Telescope Project is an international collaboration to build two 8-meter telescopes, one to be located on Mauna Kea in Hawaii, the other to be located on Cerro Pachon in Chile. The Gemini project partners include the USA, United Kingdom, Canada, Argentina, Brazil and Chile. The Gemini project is operated by the Association of Universities for Research in Astronomy (AURA) under contract to the National Science Foundation.
