Oak Ridge Associated Universities (ORAU) manages and operates the Oak Ridge Institute for Science and Education (ORISE) for the U.S, Department of Energy. The instructional technologies at ORISE have developed a computer authoring tool called ``Advisor,'' a desktop training and reference development system. Advisor employs a ``shell'' concept, which allows authors to create computer-based material that can be used for training as well as for desktop references. Advisor uses its own compiler program to translate word-processed documents into data files which are then read by the runtime program. Advisor's runtime program displays these data files as structured interactive curriculum. Advisor is completely Windows based. Advisor programs can run on standalone PC workstations or on a local area network. Developing curriculum in MSWord 2.0 files, using Advisor's instructional markup language, authors can create the following types of instructional components: lesson topics with text, graphics, sound, and links to Windows - based help files; multiple-choice questions with answers and feedback; links to definitions, text-based examples, text-based fact sheets; linear-formatted scenarios; self-assessments. To accommodate multiple users, individual student data, consisting of pre- and post-test scores, progress records, and personalized bookmarks, can be stored on diskette.
