The Naval Research Laboratory (NRL) has a requirement for the full scale design, fabrication and testing of an electro-optical tether in support of the EAGER long endurance, tethered decoy program. The contractor will be required to design, fabricate, test and deliver four (4) tethers with electrical and fiberoptic connectors installed at each termination (one termination customized for the ground-based power supply systems and the other termination customized for interface with the EAGER flight vehicle). The following are some anticipated physical/functional requirements of the tethers: (1) Diameter: 0.24 inches, Maximum, (2) Weight: 1.7 lb/100 ft, Maximum, (3) Length: 750 feet, Minimum, (4) Break Strength: 300 lbs, Minimum, (5) Continuous Power: 10 kW (1000 VDC at 10.0 Amps). Each tether will be required to centrally locate three fiber optic lines during the anticipated reel-out and reel-in process of the tether during its mission.
