433-3717, MS 86-6. NASA Lewis Research Center in conjunction with the
Department of Energy is seeking sources for a proposed Heavy-duty
Diesel Engine Technology (HDET) program procurement. The overall goal
of the HDET program is to accelerate the ability of U.S. diesel engine
manufacturers to meet proposed emission regulations while achieving
improved efficiency in diesel engines with conventional and alternative
fuel capability. This procurement is focused on heavy-duty diesel
engine efficiency improvement and in-cylinder emission reduction. A
major objective of this proposed procurement is validation Clean Diesel
-- 50 Percent Efficient (CD50) engine technologies on a multi-cylinder
test bed engine in 1999. Specific CD50 engine performance goals are
50% thermal efficiency and 2.0g/bhp*hr NOx and 0.5 g/bhp*hr particulate
emissions levels which are equal to half of the 1998 EPA standards for
heavy-duty diesel engines. The approach of this contract activity is
to develop the technologies needed to achieve the proposed contract
performance goals and validate the technologies on a multi-cylinder
test bed engine. The test bed engine and subsystems shall be consistent
with the typical performance needs of the heavy-duty diesel engine
industry. The selected research and development technologies must be
potential cost effective solutions with a viable technology transfer
path into production engines, ultimately contributing to reduced
petroleum demand and reduced emissions output. The date set for receipt
of proposals is approximate. All interested parties may submit
information for evaluation of their capabilities to the project manager
prior to the closing date of this synopsis. All responsible sources may
submit a proposal which whill be considered. Effective October 1, 1995,
the Internet will be the only source of NASA Lewis Research Center
MidRange synopses and soliciations. Other synopses will continue to be
published in the CBD as well as the Internet Address:
