US Army tank-automotive research, development and engineering Center
(TARDEC) is developing a product improvement of the fielded US Army
floating Bridge (ribbonbridge) and is requesting information pertaining
to commercially-available buoyant material. The material will be used
to reduce the improved ribbon Bridge'S (irb'S) vulnerability to small
arms fire and render It unsinkable. It will be placed inside the irb
pontoons and provi DE watertight integrity when the pontoon'S outer
coveri NG is breached. The material cannot absorb and must res ist
exposure to fresh, brackish and Salt water. The out er covering of
damaged pontoons will be repaired by welding. When subjected to heat
applied during welding, buoyant material must not produce any adverse
effects on Personnel such as, emission of toxic gases when the mat
erial is burned. Any adverse effects due to weld repairs must be offset
either by additives in the material or removal of the buoyant material
from the area to be welded. Material density is estimated to be 1.5 to
2.0 pou nds per cubic foot. Ultimate compressive strength 34 PSI at
