SPEAKEASY RADIO PHASE II - TASK GROUP POC Dawn Ernst, Task Group POC, 315-330-3225; e-mail - ernstd@rl.af.mil. In parallel with the joint service SPEAKeasy radio program (which is developing an open system, modular, multiband, reprogrammable radio, with dual-use potential), Rome Laboratory, CECOM and ARPA are sponsoring the formation of a Modular Multifunctional Information Transfer System (MMITS) Task Group to propose and adopt standards for a family of modular, reprogrammable, multiband, multimode, multiprotocol information transfer devices. The Task Group will establish a goal architecture and a set of minimum functional characteristics for the MMITS, as well as internal interface standards and performance guidelines for individual modules. The Task Group will encourage the development of a competitive industrial base to provide component hardware and software elements for the MMITS. In effect, we are attempting to create the ``PC of the communications world''. The MMITS ``PC/Workstation'', holds potential for many vendors, NOT just radio manufacturers! Memory, signal processing, software, test & instrumentation, routing/networking, media processing, I/O interfaces, vocoders, programmable filters, encoding/decoding, RF engineering, and many, many more technical disciplines have a part to play in such an Information Transfer System. Members of the Task Group may include manufacturers of applicable hardware and software, as well as research and engineering organizations and regulatory bodies. An organizational meeting of the Task Group will be held on 13 March 1996 in the Washington DC area at: The Analytical Sciences Corp (TASC), 1101 Wilson Blvd., 17th Floor, Arlington, VA 22209-2248. To register, please contact Dawn Ernst, (315) 330-3225 or Rome Lab/C3BB, 525 Brooks Road, Rome NY 13441-4514, e-mail - ernstd@rl.af.mil) prior to 4 March 1996.
