A -- MEASUREMENT OF CAFFEINE, PARAXANTHINE, AND OSMOLALITY IN SERUM FROM THE COLLABORATIVE PERINATAL PROJECT (CPP) Sol RFP NICHD-DESPR-96-07, Due 042696, contact Mrs. Lynn Salo, 301-496-4611, Contract Specialist, Harvey Shifrin, 301-496-4611, Contracting Officer. The National Institute of Child Health and Human Development is seeking a laboratory to measure caffeine, paraxanthine, and osmolality in serum from the Collaborative Perinatal Project (CPP). One objective of this study is to determine if maternal caffeine and paraxanthine levels, determined during the first or second trimester, differ between women experiencing a spontaneous abortion and women experiencing a live birth. A second objective is to determine if maternal caffeine and paraxanthine levels, determined early in the third trimester, differ between women delivering small-for-dates and appropriately-grown infants. As approximately 45% of the CPP women smoked, the study will also have good power to detect an interaction between caffeine and tobacco. This nested case-control study will use serum from the Collaborative Perinatal Project. 695 women and fetal loss at less than 20 weeks' gestation will be selected. Each woman will be matched (for gestation at blood drawing and study site) to four women who had a live birth of at least 28 weeks' gestation. Controls will also have caffeine/paraxanthine measured in the first specimen drawn after 26 weeks to determine the association between third-trimester caffeine intake and fetal growth retardation. Therefore, a total of approximately 6,300 serum samples will be analyzed. In addition, osmolality will be measured for each serum sample to determine the degree of volume loss resulting from the extended period of storage. This announcement is a new solicitation. The issuance of this RFP will be on or about March 4, 1996 and proposals due by 4:00 p.m. (local time) on April 26, 1996. Those organizations desiring a copy of the RFP may send their written request to Mrs. Lynn Salo at the address listed above. Fax requests are acceptable (301) 402-3676. All requests must cite the RFP number above and include two self-addressed mailing labels. All sources who consider themselves qualified are encouraged to submit a proposal. This advertisement does not commit the Government to made an award. (051)
