COMMERCE BUSINESS DAILY ISSUE OF FEBRUARY 22,1996 PSA#1536

22ND ENVIRONMENTAL SYMPOSIUM AND EXHIBITION, ORLANDO, FLORIDA, MARCH 18 - 21, 1996 The 1996 symposium will focus on the climate of change in the Defense Department's environmental programs and the economic implication of these changes. The central theme of the symposium ``Investing In Our Future: Reinventing Environmental Protection for Improved Readiness'' relates to an examination of DoD's ongoing self-improvement process to enhance environmental protection and improve readiness in an era of declining environmental budgets. An essential key in the examination is the role of return on investments made to preserve environmental quality. The symposium is supported by the Deputy Under Secretary of Defense Environmental Security, the Assistant Secretary of the Army (Installations, Logistics and Environment), the Assistant Chief of Staff of the Army for Installations Management and hosted by the U.S. Army Environmental Center. This symposium offers the opportunity for our government leaders to discuss the latest environmental policy charges within DoD, EPA and the Military Departments, present past accomplishments and focus our vision on the future of issues/areas related to environmental protection and readiness. The Keynote Address by the Honorable Togo D. West, Secretary of the Army, will frame the discussions, as will plenary presentations by Congressman Bill Young (R-FL), Fred Hansen, Deputy Administrator, U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, Ms. Sherri W. Goodman, Deputy Under Secretary of Defense Environmental Security, and Ms. Vivian Garfein, State of Florida Department of Environmental Protection. The program will also feature panelists from selected government departments and agencies, plus leaders from the Service secretariats and Uniformed Services. A special interest panel on ``ENVVEST'' will present an approved approach by EPA and DoD on meeting long-term compliance requirements. Upon conclusion of the plenary sessions and panels, the symposium offers thirty concurrent sessions which includes 180 technical papers. An add-on to the symposium will be a workshop on ``U.S. Army Environmental Programs'' sponsored by the Director of Environmental Programs, Department of the Army, open to U.S. Government personnel only.
