Dick, 617/495-7401, FAX 617/496-7692 Smithsonian Astrophysical Observatory (SAO) requires three custom TV cameras with image intensifier front-ends. The high- gain image intensifiers are coupled to compact CCD TV cameras with a standard RS-170 output. Two of the TV cameras are to have high-gain GEN III intensifier front-ends. The third TV guider will be fed with a coherent fiber optic bundle and must use a high-gain fiber-optically-coupled GEN II image intensifier. The two GEN III-fed TV cameras must have an extremely compact front-end package with electrical leads running to separate electronics packages. The GEN II-fed camera may be somewhat larger, but the front-end package will be mounted separately from the electronics to minimize the length of the camera. The intensified TV cameras will be used for astronomical detection of extremely faint celestial sources, and therefore the gain of the image intensifiers must be near the individual photon-counting limit. The intensified TV cameras must be robust, withstanding repeated 3g accelerations, high humidity and temperatures as low as 0 degrees Fahrenheit.
