The Air Force Flight Test Center has a requirement for one each, Digital Frequency Discriminator METRAPLEX part number DFD-08-01(CJ109) and one each, Digital Frequency Modulator METRAPLEX part number DFM-32-01(CJ109). The -32 and -08 denotes the number of channels included (32 is the maximum). These units are used to discriminate both IRIG standard and non standard frequency multiplexed (FM) signals either received from an airborne telemetry package or from multiplexed signals recorded on an instrumentation magnetic tape recorder. These units are unique from standard analog FM equipent in that they digitize the incoming signal and process it as a digital signal, and then out put it in either digital or analog form. The use of digital circuitry allows for maximum flexibility in processing of the signals (i.e. it is easier to manipulate 1 and 0's than it is to do things to an analog voltage). The flexibility of the box allows for non-standard IRIG signals or allows the operator the flexibility of changing certain parameters (filters, center frequencies, etc.) The DFM-32-01(CJ109) has the same basic functions as the DFD except this box puts the analog signals together in a frequency multiplex for recording or transmitting. The box controls are identical for IRIG and non IRIG standard frequencies.
