A -- RELATIONSHIP OF PRE-NATAL CARE UTILIZATION AND CHILDHOOD LEAD EXPOSURE SOL RFP NIH-ES-96-26 POC Contact Point: Kathy Hughes, Contract Specialist, (919) 541-0420 The National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences seeks a site with an active clinic for the diagnosis and treatment of childhood lead toxicity to identify and evaluate the role of utilization of prenatal care in reducing risk factors to lead exposure during gestation and reducing the risk to low-level lead toxicity in the fetus and newborn infant. The project will involvethe recruitment of minority women who reside in high-risk exposure lead environments, some of whom have received acceptable levels of prenatal care and some who have received little or no prenatal care. Blood lead levels of study population women will be ) 10 g/dl. Blood concentrations will be determined at birth, six months, and one year of age. Residences will be assessed for lead exposure risk factors. A health care system for providing well-child visits and early, periodic screening and diagnostic testing for children in the study population should be available and a perinatal registry and system of tracking and following lead poisoned children in use. The estimated period of performance is 3 years. Release date of RFP is anticipated in mid-March with proposals due in late April 1996. All responsible sources may submit a proposal which shall reference RFP NIH-ES-96-26 and which will be considered by the agency.(0058)
