COMMERCE BUSINESS DAILY ISSUE OF MARCH 5,1996 PSA#1544DEVELOPMENT OF A NEW INTERNATIONAL STANDARD, ISO 12087-5, BASIC IMAGE
INTERCHANGE FORMAT (BIIF) Contact Rafael Goldsmith,
703/275-5647/Contracting Officer, Nicole Pierce, 703/275-5265. The
Department of Defense, Central Imagery Office (CIO), is promoting
participation in the development of a new international standard, ISO
12087-5, Basic Image Interchange Format (BIIF), to provide a migration
path for the operational National Imagery Transmission Format (NITF).
As part of the next NITFS Technical Board (NTB) agenda for 13 March
1996, 0830 to 1130, current NITF activities in the DoD, Federal, NATO
and international standards forums will be presented. The associated
discussions will include the goals for BIIF to incorporate new
technology and extend interoperability to other raster and vector data
communities while protecting the investment made in numerous
operational NITF systems. Since the success of new standards depends on
their acceptance by users and developers, the CIO solicits the
participation of the NITF Government and Business community at this
meeting to ensure that the conceptual goals and technical objectives
for BIIF are realistic, attainable and will meet the intended support
for early adoption. The current BIIF development schedule calls for
publication of the International Standard in the Fall of 1997.
