This procurement is set-aside 100% for small businesses. The National Library of Medicine (NLM) is seeking Research Support Services for the Unified Medical Language System (UMLS) Metathesaurus. NLM needs assistance in: analyzing the structure and semantics of additional biomedical vocabularies, classifications, and information sources proposed for addition to the Metathesaurus; developing the logic and algorithms for preprocessing and editing these sources so data from them can be merged effectively into the Metathesaurus; performing lexical and semantic analyses of the Metathesaurus to identify potential errors and omitted relationships, to assign priorities for human review and editing, and to identify classes of records suitable for batch editing; and developing algorithms, data structures, and procedures that support simultaneous distributed maintenance of the Methathesaurus, as well as maintenance of its multiple source vocabularies within the Metathesaurus environment. This requirement will build on work done under previous contracts. The contractor will require thorough familiarity with the UMLS Methathesaurus; expertise in clinical and biomedical sciences, medical informatics, computer science, library and information science, and thesaurus construction. The work requires a T1 Internet connection, computer resources comparable to a Sun server architecture with at least 50 gigabytes of storage, a Unix operating system, and Ingres Relational Database Management System, and experience in the use of these tools.
