COMMERCE BUSINESS DAILY ISSUE OF MARCH 13,1996 PSA#1550Naval Inventory Control Point, Code 0541, 5450 Carlisle Pike, PO Box
2020, Mechanicsburg, PA 17055-0788 99 -- SHELF LIFE CONFERENCE Due 032296, contact point, Debbie
Trautman, Code 0541, (717) 790-1506. Product Shelf-Life - from date of
manufacture/cure/assembly/pack, the amount of time that an item can
remain on the shelf in the package state, until deterioration occurs,
causing the item to be disposed of, or tested for re-use. It affects
everyone and everything - from the food we eat to the medicine we take
to the batteries we use. For both our personal and professional
existence shelf-life limitations have altered the way we buy, use, and
store material. However, due to the critical use of certain common off
the shelf items, the Department of Defense and GSA limit shelf-life
time frames to insure 100% readiness. And, with a large portion of
hazardous material having limited life expectancy, the safety of our
environment is compromised due to excessive hazardous waste and
exorbitant disposal costs. In an attempt to alleviate some of the
problems associated with providing the military services with usable
material, the DOD Shelf-Life Committee is asking for your help. The 3rd
Annual DOD/Industry Shelf-Life Conference is scheduled for 18-20 June
1996 as the Harrisburg Hilton, Harrisburg, PA. We are currently
compiling a list of speakers for this event. We are currently compiling
a list of speakers for this event. This is the chance for your to
present your ideas to a group totally committed to the proper
management and control of shelf-life material, and to the members of
the DOD Shelf-Life Committee that develops and enforces DOD shelf-life
policy. Each of our two previous conferences were attended by over 100
participants. Prepare a 500 word synopsis of your presentation, and
forward it to Debbie Trautman, Navy Administrator for the DOD
Shelf-Life Program, Naval Inventory Control Point-Mechanicsburg, Code
0541, 5450 Carlisle Pike, Mechanicsburg, PA 17055-0788, by 22 March
1996. You may contact Ms. Trautman by calling (717) 790-1506, or
facsimile a request for more details to (717) 790-3480. The Internet
address is Debbie_Trautman@ICPMECH.NAVY.MIL. This is the conference
premise: if you want to participate in basic to in-depth discussions
concerning shelf-life, this conference is for you! Please give widest
dissemination. Participating speakers are encouraged from the following
DOD/Federal and private industry disciplines: Engineers doing R&D
concerning the reduction of product deterioration; Companies developing
new packaging procedures that could provide additional protection to
eliminate or prolong the shelf-life of material; Industrial concerns
experimenting with new ideas concerning the recycling and
re-utilization of hazardous shelf-life material; Industry personnel
selling shelf-life material to DOD activities; Buyers/item managers
procuring shelf-life material for stock; Engineers/end users concerned
with the sales/development of shelf-life material; Companies wanting
to provide additional information concerning shelf-life. It is
anticipated that all conference attendees will participate in the
morning classroom sessions, and the afternoon will consist of breakout
sessions concerning more detailed discussions, and will be tailored
more toward debate format. The following are suggested topics of
consideration for potential speakers: commodity areas, such as rubber
products, hazardous material, medical subsistence, batteries, tires,
petroleums, oils, lubricants, paints, sealants, adhesives; industry
procurement procedures, including production lead time, commercial off
the shelf material, prime vendor/Direct Vendor Delivery initiatives,
acting as vendor for material manufactured overseas;
recycling/re-utilization/manufacturer ``buy backs'' concerning
hazardous material; demonstrations of computer software programs/new
marking procedures for managing shelf-life material; test results
concerning new procedures for the reduction of hazardous
waste/alternative uses for disposal of expired shelf-life material;
industry procedures for the test/inspection of extendible shelf-life
material; biotechnology initiatives for the prolonging of shelf-life
requirements for food; additional areas of concern. (068) Loren Data Corp. http://www.ld.com (SYN# 0456 19960312\99-0001.SOL)
