COMMERCE BUSINESS DAILY ISSUE OF MARCH 13,1996 PSA#1550NASA Langley Research Center, Mail Stop 126, Hampton, Va. 23681-0001 A -- MATERIALS RESEARCH FOR HIGH SPEED CIVIL TRANSPORT AND GENERIC
HYPERSONICS SOL 1-161-DM.1746 POC Darlene T. Baxter (804) 864-2472.
This is a notice of intent to increase the effort under NASA Contract
NAS1- 20014 on a noncompetitive basis in accordance with 10 U.S.C.
2304(c)(1)-- ''Only One Responsible Source,'' to McDonnel Douglas
Aerospace, Advanced Transport Aircraft Systems, 2401 East Wardlow Road,
Long Beach, CA 90807- 4418. This is a continuation of effort for
Materials Research for High Speed Civil Transport and Generic
Hypersonics currently being provided by McDonnel Douglas Aerospace.
This effort involves the development of elevated temperature airframe
materials and structures technology. The efforts involves the
development of advanced metallic alloys and fiber reinforced
composites, fabrication technology, and design methodology for actively
cooled thermal structures. This research shall also include the
development and analysis of: high temperature Stitched Resin Film
Infused materials characterization and demonstration articles,
drapeability of stitched dry preforms materials and demonstration
articles, low cost beta titanium alloy commercialization,
characterization, and associated low cost fabrication methods,
non-structural components for high temperature applications, affordable
high temperature stitched resin film infused applications on supersonic
and hypersonic vehicles, super plastic forming/diffusion bonding
Prototype on the hot high lifting devices, and titanium matrix
composites landing gear for the High Speed Civilian Transport and
hypersonic aircraft. McDonnel Douglas has the unique expertise to
develop advanced alpha+beta, alpha and beta titanium alloys with
enhanced superplastic forming characteristics, higher specific modulus
and strength, improved creep resistance, better stress corrosion
resistance, and higher temperature capability. McDonnel Douglas has the
necessary facilities and equipment for fabrication and testing
high-temperature metallic structure. Their unique fabrication and
experimental capabilities include superplastic forming and diffusion
bonding equipment for large structural components, development and
fabrication facilities for multisheet honeycomb and sandwich
construction for large structural components, and specialized
temperature/humidity/altitude/vacuum chambers for conducting durability
testing under simulated environmental conditions for hypersonic flight.
