Moore (410) 671-2227 (Site Code DAAM01) The U.S. Army CBDCOM intends to negotiate on a sole source basis with Computer Sciences Corporation (CSC) for the revision of technical manuals for the Generator, Smoke, Mechanical: Mechanized Smoke Obscurant System, M58. The M58 is an improved large area smoke system mounted in a M113A3 tracked vehicle which is capable of providing both visual and infrared obscuration. The M58 system was developed to meet the Army's urgent requirement for a smoke vehicle with the improved mobility to keep pace with the mechanized and armored battalions. The smoke system used in the M58 vehicle is essentially the same as that in the HMMWV mounted M56 smoke system. Both the M58 and the M56 are currently being produced by the same initial production contractor, who has just completed a pre-production evaluation effort, which has led to a number of system design changes. Computer Science Corporation (CSC), who prepared the original M56 technical manuals, is currently revising them to reflect the smoke system design changes. Many of the revisions that are being done for the M56 manuals are directly applicable to the M58 manuals.
