You are cordially invited to attend a Symposium on Optical Systems
Concepts and Technology for the Next Generation Space Telescope (NGST)
at the Marshall Space Flight Center (MSFC) in Huntsville, Alabama,
April 15 - 17, 1996. The symposium is being organized by MSFC's Center
of Excellence for Space Optical Systems in support of the Goddard
Space Flight Center's mission studies on the NGST. The purpose of the
symposium is six fold: 1) To introduce the community to the proposed
goals for the Optical Telescope Assembly (OTA) of the NGST. 2) To
solicit from the community concepts for the OTA. 3) To offer the
community (particularly small businesses) an opportunity to show case
technologies which would be applicable to the OTA. 4) To identify new
technologies which need to be developed. 5) To promote an interchange
of information amongst members of the community. 6) To raise awareness
of the potential for submissions to a SBIR focused topic on Large
Aperture Space Telescope Systems to be released this summer.
Consequently, presentations are being solicited which will address the
above areas. The length of the presentations will be 30 minutes.
Presentation material should be made available in a format suitable for
reproduction and distribution to the attendees. If more presentations
are submitted then time permits, then parallel sessions or poster
sessions will be employed. If you are making a presentation, please let
me know by April 1. The symposium will be held at the Morris Auditorium
in Bldg 4200 at MSFC. The symposium will start at 9:00 am on April 15th
and will adjourn at 4:30 pm April 17th. A tour of the optics facilities
at MSFC will be provided for interested persons during the symposium.
A detailed agenda will be provided at a later date. A block of rooms
has been set aside at the Huntsville Marriot Tranquility Base, phone
#205-830-2222. Rooms are available at a government rate of $58 (picture
id required) and a corporate rate of $79. Reservations must be made by
March 29th. A map of the area and a list of other hotels can be made
available upon request. The current goals of the Optical Telescope
assembly are as follows: Aperture diameter: 8 m, F#: 1.5, FOV: 10
arcmin x 10 arcmin, Wavelength - 1 microns to 5 microns (goal 0.5 - 30
microns), Temperature - 60 K (goal 30 K) Passive Cooling, Orbit - L2,
Weight - 1000 Kg, Packaged in upper 8 m of Atlas IIas shroud for
launch, Cost - $100M. Additional information may be obtained by
