61 -- DC MOTOR SYSTEM UPGRADE SOL N00146-96-R-0028. The Naval Aviation Depot, MCAS, Cherry Point, NC requires replacement of the Whirltower 1500/3000 horsepower motor-generator set drive current drive system with solid state drive system. The Whirltower facility is used to dynamically balance and trim helicopter blades after repair or overhaul. The blades are tested by rotating them at a specified RPM, max 300 RPM, varying the pitch angle of the rotating blades, and measuring blade track, pitching moment at the rotor hub and blade lead leg. The present Whirltower drive system consists of a 1968 GE Direct Current (DC) vertical shaft motor rated at 600 armature volts, 150/300 RPM, 1500 HP, 4100 amps max which directly drives a three bladed rotor head where the helicopter blades are attached during testing. The Naval Aviation Depot, Cherry Point requires the replacement of the M-G set, including design and manufacture of DC solid state drive system, design of system installation in the existing equipment bldg, removing the existing M-G set and control equipment from the equipment building; installation of new solid state system, control, and instrumentation; complete startup and acceptance testing, of the new system, operator and maintenance personnel training and a one year, 24 hour max response time provision.
