Wright-Patterson AFB OH has a need for measuring optical spectra with a very precise spectral resolution at ultra low illuminance levels in the accomplishment of the materials hardening mission. The spectral resolution measurement requirement is less than 0.1 nanometer accuracy from 400 to 1100 nm. This measurement accuracy is critical in determining the characteristics of aircraft displays as well as the spectral characteristics of high performance filters being developed. There is also a second requirement to measure the amount of light emitted by aircraft displays down to light levels (with the same spectral resolution) to starlight levels to ensure display/filter compatibility with night vision goggles. The requirement for both high spectral resolution and ultra low light sensitivity is a requirement unique to hardened materials applications.
