COMMERCE BUSINESS DAILY ISSUE OF APRIL 3,1996 PSA#1565TECHNOLOGY TRANSFER OPPORTUNITY: SANDIA NATIONAL LABORATORIES SD-4712,
Advanced Range Imaging System, US Pat 4,935,616. Sandia National
Laboratories seeks to commercialize its patented scannerless range
imaging system. This innovative technology, the Advanced Range Imaging
System (ARIS), was developed at Sandia for physical security
applications, specifically perimeter-intrusion detection and
assessment. ARIS is a scannerless laser radar imaging system that
generates three-dimensional radar images similar in resolution to
standard video camera images without requiring outdoor lighting. The
system uses diffuse infrared energy to floodlight-illuminate an entire
surveillance scene and a gain-modulated image-intensified CCD camera
to measure the change in phase of the energy reflected from objects in
the scene. The range information for every point in the scene is
processed in parallel, offering faster image acquisition than
conventional scanning ladar systems. The ARIS simultaneously produces,
in real-time, both two-dimensional reflectance images and
three-dimensional range images at 7 frames per second, at ranges of 200
meters with a range resolution of less than 1 foot. A remote operator
can calibrate and control the system using an IBM-compatible PC with a
custom board and Windows 3.1-compatible interface software. In brief,
ARIS's advantages include a solid-state, scannerless design for a
simple, compact, and less-expensive system. Accurate 3D images from
which an object's distance, size, and velocity can be determined.
Invisibility of scene illumination to the unaided human eye.
Elimination of expensive perimeter lighting, which can interfere with
response force efforts. Volume detection, hence immunity to camouflage.
Sandia is looking for partners to commercialize this technology,
particularly small businesses, applications developers (end-users), and
system integrators and manufacturers. Partnership agreements include
commercial licenses and Cooperative Research & Development Agreements
(CRADAs). Please contact us for details: Joanne Trujillo, Sandia
