(CTC) is hosting the ``2nd Annual Cadmium Alternatives: An Information
Exchange in Johnstown, PA, on May 13-15, 1996. The Information
Exchange is sponsored by the National Defense Center for Environmental
Excellence (NDCEE), operated by CTC for the Department of Defense
(DOD). The NDCEE leads and supports DOD facilities and the associated
industrial base in adopting a comprehensive approach to pollution
prevention and addresses other high priority environmental issues. The
Information Exchange will provide a forum for discussions of
activities aimed at identifying alternatives to cadmium coatings.
Representatives from industry, the military, and regulatory agencies
will describe their ongoing projects to eliminate the use of cadmium on
a variety of parts. The problems encountered in finding and qualifying
alternatives for cadmium will also be discussed. Suppliers with
off-the-shelf alternatives will have an opportunity to describe their
products and present supporting data and application information. Data
sharing in a workshop environment will help attendees learn more about
new advancements in the industry. Co-sponsoring this Information
Exchange are the Department of Defense (DOD), the American
Electroplaters and Surface Finishers Society, Inc. (AESF), the
Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), Lawrence Livermore National
Laboratories (LLNL), the National Center for Manufacturing Sciences
(NCMS), and the Society for Vacuum Coaters (SVC). Abstracts summarizing
activities regarding cadmium alternatives are being accepted for
presentations. Also, a limited number of tabletops are available for
organizations to display their products and services regarding cadmium
alternatives. CTC will be coating sample parts with a variety of
cadmium alternatives at CTC's Demonstration Factory in Johnstown, PA on
May 14. Attendees at the Information Exchange are welcomed to supply
CTC with parts or samples to be coated during these demonstrations.
