WR-ALC uses MIL-P-85891 plastic media type V (acrylic) to remove
MIL-P-233776 primer and MIL-C-85285 polyurethane coatings from
aircraft. Two waste streams are produced. One the waste streams is
media mixed with paint and primer that pass through 40 mesh screens.
The other waste stream is an airborne mixture of acrylic and paint and
primer dust collected in a bag house. We would like to reduce the
waste streams. Present cost to dispose of the waste is about $0.43 a
pound. Cost of new acrylic media is about $1.00 a pound. We would like
to consider the feasibility of separating the acrylic from the paint
and primer. The acrylic is approximately 80 percent of the waste
stream. We could recycle the acrylic back into the paint and primer
removal process. Currently, Warner Robins Air Logisitcs Center has
built a prototype electrostatic separator, which is in the process of
being evaluated. The separator differs from commercial electrostatic
precipitators. We depend on electrostatic charges generated within the
mixture. The mixture is passed between two rollers with opposite
charges on the rollers. The particles rich in acrylic are attracted to
one roller and the paint and primer rich particles are attracted to
the oposite roller. Robins Air Force Base is interested in finding
sources that have experience in separating acrylic media from paint and
primer, or could work with WR-ALC in developing a production
electrostatic separator, or some other process to separate acrylic from
paint and primer. Interested sources should submit written responses to
