Contracting Officer, 703/280-7812. DESCRIPTION e.g. SOURCES SOUGHT. The
U.S. Postal Service is seeking a large package sorting system to
process large packages within BMC's. These packages are sometimes
referred to as Non-Machinable Oversize (NMO). These are the packages
that are too large or heavy to be processed on the carousel sorter. The
LPSS consists of the In-Feed, Induction, Transfer, Sorter, Run Out and
Take-Away Sections. The In-Feed Section conveying equipment moves the
packages to the Induction Section. At the Induction Section a facing
and keying operation is performed. In this operation the package is
rotated to make the address visible and the ZIP Code or the Sectional
Center Code (first three digits) or some other code is entered from a
keyboard. The package is then inducted into the Transfer Section, were
conveying equipment moves the packages into the Sorter Section. A bar
code symbol scanner(s) that scans for the destination ZIP Code may be
part of this section. Future plans call for a Manifest System that
includes a Weigh-In-Motion Scale and a Dimensioning System. From the
Transfer Section the package enters the Sorter Section. The Sorter
Section distributes the packages by the keyed code or scanned ZIP Code.
This section includes the Sorter. The next section is the Run-Out
Section were packages are staged and additional sorts are made if
required. Next, in the Take-Away Section Packages are removed from the
area of the LPSS using the Container Routing System (CRS), fork-lift,
etc. Companies who currently possess this technology are invited to
submit its documentation/information/data for review and analysis.
