66 -- PULSED NEODYMIUM-DOPED YAG LASER SYSTEM SOL 52RANB60C033 DUE 061796 POC Marilyn Scherer, 303-497-3657 The National Institute of Standards and Technology intends to purchase a neodymium-doped YAG laser system that will operate continuous wave, mode-locked, or combined mode-locked and Q-switched. The specifications for this laser system are given below. Note that ALL the laser performance specifications assume that the laser is operating in the lowest order TEM00 transverse spatial mode. 1. Continuous-wave (cw) and pulsed operation at 1064 nm wavelength: a. In the cw operation state, the minimum optical output power is 12 W. b. In mode-locked operation the repetition rate must be between 80 MHz and 100 MHz. The output must be at least 1.5 kW peak power with the pulses not exceeding 100 ps in duration. The average output power must be at least 12 W. c. In combined mode-locked and Q-switched operation the Q-switched envelope of the mode-locked pulses must not exceed 300 ns. The Q- switched repetition rate must be at least 400 Hz. The peak output power must be at least 1 MW. The Q-switched pulse energy must be at least 2.0 millijoules. The pulse energy in the largest mode-locked pulse under the Q-switched envelope must be at least 100 microjoules. The average output power in combined mode-locked and Q-switched operation must be at least 10 W. 2. Laser Stability, Beam Diameter and Point Stability: The peak-to-peak amplitude fluctuation of the laser while operating in mode-locked operation must not exceed one percent. Peak-to-peak amplitude fluctuations of the laser while operating simultaneously mode-locked and Q-switched must not exceed five percent. The beam diameter of the of the laser output at 1064 nm must not exceed 0.6 mm. The beam pointing variation of the laser, under any of its operating conditions, must not exceed 80 microradians. 3. Physical Size of Laser and Power Supply: The laser must require a space no more than 300 cm in length and 30 cm in width. The power supply must be no higher than 60 cm, no wider than 100 cm, and no deeper than 80 cm. 4. Optional Upgrades to Laser System for Operation at 1319 nm: The laser must have the capability to be upgraded by the installation of optional components that would permit it to operate cw, mode-locked, or simultaneously mode-locked and Q-switched at a wavelength of 1319 nm. For all of the specifications relating to the optional laser upgrades, the laser is assumed to operate in the TEM00 lowest-order spatial mode. a. In cw operation, the output power at 1319 nm must be at least 1 W. b. In mode-locked operation, the average output power must be at least 1.5 W, the peak power must be at least 0.15 kW, and the pulse width must be no greater than 120 ps. The mode-locked repetition rate must be between 80 MHz and 100 MHz. c. In combined mode-locked and Q-switched operation, the average power must be at least 1.0 W., the peak power must be at least 50 kW, the duration of the Q-switched envelope of the mode-locked pulses must not exceed 1300 ns. The width of the central mode-locked pulse under the Q-switched envelope must not exceed 150 ps. 5. Optional Upgrades to the Laser System for Operation at 532 nm: The laser must have the capability to be upgraded by the installation of optional components that would permit it to operate mode-locked, or simultaneously mode-locked and Q-switched at a wavelength of 532 nm via second-harmonic generation of the 1064 nm fundamental. For all of the specifications relating to the optional laser upgrades, the laser is assumed to operate in the TEM00 lowest-order spatial mode. a. In mode-locked operation, the average power must be at least 1.0 W and the pulse width must not exceed 100 ps. Peak power output under mode-locked operation must be at least 0.2 kW. b. In combined mode-locked and Q-switched operation the average power must be at least 1.0 W and the peak power must be at least 500 kW. The Q-switched envelope of the mode- locked pulses must not exceed 300 ns. The pulse width of the mode-locked pulses under the Q- switched envelope must not exceed 100 ps. The energy of the largest mode-locked pulse under the Q-switched envelope must be at least 50 microjoules. c. Peak-to-peak amplitude fluctuations of the laser in mode-locked operation must not exceed two percent. Peak-to-peak amplitude fluctuations of the laser in combined mode-locked and Q-switched operation must not exceed eight percent. 6. Optional Upgrades to Produce Ultraviolet Light: The laser must be upgradable at some future time for the production of ultraviolet light through third-harmonic generation and forth-harmonic generation of the fundamental wavelength at 1064 nm. The Government intends to buy only the laser system now, and will, at its discretion, include the upgrade items as options to the contract for purchase within one year after date of contract award. This synopsis is published for informational purposes only; solicitation is not available; no telephone requests will be accepted. Only qualification statements will be considered at this time. In the absence of other qualified sources, it is the intent of the Government to negotiate a sole source contract under the authority of 41 USC 253 (c) (1) with Excel Quantronix, 45 Adams Avenue, Hauppauge, NY 11788. See Note 22. (0143)
