Service plans to issue a Request For Proposal (RFP) to conduct an
oceanographical study in the Northeastern Gulf of Mexico shelf entitled
''DeSoto Canyon Eddy Intrusion Study.'' This study will focus on
quantifying and characterizing the physical scales, dynamic mechanisms,
and strength associated with Loop Current and Eddy intrusions in this
area. This study will provide a better understanding of the outer shelf
circulation, and how the Loop Current and associate eddies exchange
momentum and mass with the shelf. The role of the DeSoto Canyon will be
clarified both a route for such intrusions and as a conduit of mass
exchange between the deep Gulf and the shelf. Requests for copies of
this RFP may be requested by fas at (703) 787-1387 or by mail to the
above address. Please include your organization, point of contact,
address, and phone and fax numbers with your request. Telephone
