of pages and language(s) of the notified document: Proposed Amendment
to the Motor Vehicle Safety Regulations (pages 1427-1431). 6.
Description of content: Section 206 of the Motor Vehicle Safety
Regulations specifies the design and performance standards governing
side-door latches, hinges, and locks. At the time this Regulation first
came into force, hatchbacks, station wagons, and vans were a smaller
proportion of Canada's vehicle fleet than they are today, and no
requirements were applied to latches, hinges, and locks of rear doors.
With the growing popularity of motor vehicles that open at the rear
and a high probability of death associated with being ejected from a
vehicle, it has become necessary to extend the requirements of Section
206 to the latches, hinges and locks of hatches, tailgates, and rear
doors. This amendment would apply to passenger cars, station wagons,
and vans with a gross vehicle weight rating of less than 4,536 kg. 7.
Objective and rationale: Protection of human safety. 8. Relevant
documents: Canada Gazette, Part I, 11 May 1996. 9. Proposed date of
adoption: 1 September 1997. Proposed date of entry into force: 1
September 1997. 10. Final date for comments: 10 July 1996. (159) Loren Data Corp. http://www.ld.com (SYN# 0323 19960610\FO-0003)
