SANDIA ELECTRONIC COMMERCE TECHNOLOGY OPPORTUNITY Sandia National Laboratories has five U.S. pending patents and a PCT filing in the general area of electronic commerce. The invention, ``Trustee-Based Tracing for Electronic Cash and Making of Anonymous Change'', was developed within Defense Programs at Sandia National laboratories. We have identified four distinct commercial applications with accompanying benefits. A description of the technology and its accompanying benefit includes: 1. A Method For Electronic Cash Using General And Flexible Trustee Tracing (key-escrow). Novel and patented idea of applying key-escrow to electronic commerce. Threshold and general access-structure techniques for trustees. Trustee pre-processing/non-involvement of trustees in withdrawal, payment, deposit. Much improved anonymity to non-Chairman electronic commerce. System accountability in times of criminal or financial emergency. Precise tracing, not infringing on others' privacy. Does not interfere with other aspects of e-cash such as transferability. Off line/on-line use. Credit transaction use. Use of voting schemes. Virtual elimination of losses on small purchases. Fraud proof for on-line use. Prevents all off-line fraud except over-spending (prevented by other means). 2. Highly Efficient Electronic Cash Scheme With The Following Features. Low storage, high computational efficiency for buyers, sellers, banks. Power of a general e-cash system. Improvement for existing smart card applications. Novel, patented ideas to reduce storage requirements at bank/issuer. Includes other aspects of e-cash such as transferability. Availability of a simple trustee-tracing extension. Off line/on-line use. Use in voting schemes. Virtual elimination of losses on small purchases. Fraud proof for on-line use. Prevents all off-line fraud except over-spending (prevented by other means). 3. Electronic Cash System That Does Not Rely On Public Key Technology. No public key encryption or signatures. 4. Anonymity Without Encryption (public or symmetric). We are now in the process of developing a strategy for licensing this lab-developed technology. Currently, Sandia is looking for expressions of interest from companies who have both the interest and the ability to take this electronic commerce technology to market. Depending upon any prior commitments, a license can take a variety of forms, up to and including the opportunity for an exclusive license. However, keep in mind, that this is not an offer for the sale of a license, but rather a solicitation of interested parties for potential license opportunities.
