In February 1996, the Defense Mapping Agency (DMA) was given the lead in the development and execution of the DoD Geospatial Information Integrated Product Team (IPT). The Defense Mapping Agency has been actively planning the start-up activities needed to formally initiate the IPT. Although DMA will chair the IPT, participation will consist of a broad range of organizations from the national security and defense communities. Oversight will be provided by the Assistant Secretary of Defense for C3I and Joint Chief of Staff. As a result of the ongoing process to establish the IPT, it is considered imperative that DMA have technical input from commercial industry in the development of a geospatial information infrastructure capable of supporting the interoperability requirements of the national security and defense customers. The Open Geospatial Information System Consortium (OGC), a not-for-profit organization, is considered the professional entity which represents this open system aspect of the geospatial industry. Thus, it is anticipated that a contract will be entered into with OGC on a sole source basis to solicit and provide the technical input of the commercial geospatial industry to the DoD Geospatial Information IPT.
