The George Washington and Jefferson National Forests offer two historic properties for adaptive use. Each property requires substantial renovation. Powells Fort located near Strasburg, VA is a Civilian Conservation Center Camp constructed and occupied during the mid 1930s. Until recently, the property was used as a summer church camp. The property includes 6 cabins, a central toilet/bathhouse, kitchen/messhall, swimming pool, open activity shelters and several outbuildings. The kitchen must be renovated to meet current health standards. Compatible uses include an organization camp or bed and breakfast featuring cabins in a rustic setting. The Forest Service has no estimate of renovation costs. The second property is the Konnarock Girls School located at Konnarock, VA in the heart of Mt Rogers National Recreation Area. The school was built during 1925 and used as a finishing school for girls until the late 1950s. The school is unique in that it is sided with chestnut bark shingles. The Forest Service contracted an adaptive use plan for a Bed and Breakfast and small conference center. The proposal includes 13-14 guest rooms, each with a private bath, kitchen, dining room, conference room for 100 people, a small conference room, manager's residence and a parlor. Preliminary cost estimates suggest an investment of $1.3 to $1.5 million may be necessary to implement this proposal. Other potential uses may include a health center or corporate retreat. A special use permit will be issued for each property for up to 30 years. At the end of the 30 year period the permit may be renewed.
