COMMERCE BUSINESS DAILY ISSUE OF JULY 16,1996 PSA#1637Department of the Interior, U.S. Geological Survey, Office of
Procurement and Contracts, Mail Stop 205B, Room 6A331, 12201 Sunrise
Valley Drive, Reston, VA 22092 70 -- CD-ROM SOFTWARE POC Kimberly A. Kleeb (703) 648-7370 This is not
a notice for a solicitation. This is a Request for Information (RFI).
The U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) will be assessing commercial
solutions for placing large-volume printout and microfiche information
onto CD-Recordable (CD-R) media. Companies desiring to participate
must have the ability to fully index print-image information and make
this information accessible in both fielded and full-text modes from
CD-R discs. In addition, this access must be available on a stand-alone
CD-ROM- equipped PC, over a LAN from a CD-ROM server, from a 3270
terminal, as well as over the Internet using standard WEB browsers.
Security and lockout capabilities must also be available to limit
access to the indexed information at both the report and page level.
Interested companies are requested to build a demonstration database
using a print-image test file named ~DEMOREPT~ (approximately 8
megabytes in size). The compressed self-extracting version of this file
can be downloaded from the USGS FTP site (ftp.usgs.gov/pub/rfiproto) as
the file named ~DEMO.EXE~ and then executed on a DOS machine to
re-create the full DEMOREPT print-image file. The DEMOREPT file
consists of a sample print-image file that is to be indexed, placed on
a CD-R disc, and made available by the vendor for remote access via
the Internet. The file should be indexed two ways: full-text and
fielded. The full-text index should allow access to the report based on
any character string search term. For example, if the user were to type
~SIMS, LAUREN~ as the search string, the software would display Page 2
of the report and highlight the corresponding search term. The second
type of access to the print-image file should be ~fielded~ index. This
type of index would allow the user to select a particular field on the
report such as ~OFFICE TOTALS:~ and then provide a value to search
upon. This fielded search should also be able to accommodate a ~range
search~ such that the user, for example, could request to see any
~OFFICE TOTAL:~ that exceeded the value of ~$100,000.~ It would also be
valuable if another index field could be established for the ~VOUCHER~
number, such that a search could be made for all pages where the
VOUCHER number was equal to ~530084001.~ As soon as the demonstration
database is ready for examination, a message to this effect should be
emailed to the address of ~cnethawa@usgs.gov~ with a cc to
~kkleeb@usgs.gov~ no later than July 29, 1996. The demonstration must
be accessible over the Internet and, an appropriate URL address must be
included in the email message. Also, a point of contact (name and phone
number) should be included in the email message. Any questions
regarding the test file shall be submitted to ~cnethawa@usgs.gov~ with
a cc to ~kkleeb@usgs.gov~. Participating vendors are responsible for
periodically checking the USGS FTP address for updates and/or
additional instructions. Pricing information and corporate literature
is not requested and will not be considered as part of this assessment.
This request is not a formal solicitation and NO contract will result
from this synopsis. Any subsequent solicitation will be synopsized
prior to its release. The Government will not pay for demonstration
databases provided in response to this synopsis. (0194) Loren Data Corp. http://www.ld.com (SYN# 0464 19960715\70-0002.SOL)
