circulated in accordance with Article 10.6. G/TBT/NOTIF.96.183. 1.

Proposed Amendment to the Motor Vehicle Safety Regulations (pages
1658-1676). 6. Description of content: This proposed Amendment to the
Motor Vehicle Safety Regulations would introduce more stringent
emission standards for light-duty vehicles, light-duty trucks,
heavy-duty vehicles and motor cycles. The proposal would harmonize
Canadian Emission Standards with those applicable in the United States
under the US Environmental Protection Agency's (EPA) Federal Emission
Porgramme. These Standards are considered to be the most stringent
national emission standards in the world. It is proposed that the new
requirements become effective with the 1998 model year. Furthermore,
the Amendment would ensure that Canadian Emission Standards continued
to be in harmony with the US for each subsequent model year. 7.
