Project is seeking qualified firms to fabricate several steel
assemblies for use in the two Gemini telescopes. This work will consist
of the following: (a) Two Mirror Covers, which are large steel frame
structures (8m x 8m x 0.5m) weighing 3 tons each, comprised of many
built up sections and flanged bolted connections; (b) Four Altitude
Cable Wraps, which are fabricated steel structures (2m x 2m x 2m)
weighing 1 ton each, comprised of a rolled steel drum supported on
bearings and mounted between two vertical end plates; (c) Two Azimuth
Cable Wraps which are fabricated steel circular frames (6m diameter 2m
high) comprised of many bolted and welded components made by rolling
standard structural steel shapes, floor sections fabricated from
standard tread plate; (d) Two Mirror Carts, which are large fabricated
steel structures (5m x 5m x 2.5m) weighing 15 tons each, comprised of
two interconnecting fabricated steel frames, with many bolted and
welded connections; and (e) Two Seismic Bracket Assemblies, which are
comprised of four steel fabricated brackets (1m x 0.5m) with connecting
plates. (Note: All dimensions and weights are approximate.) The work
will also include machining of some fabricated components, attachment
face clean up, machine positioned drilling, etc. Many small plated
steel precision components, blocks, pins, etc are required. The Gemini
8-m Telescopes Project is an international collaboration to build two
8-meter telescopes one to be located on Mauna Kea in Hawaii, the other
to be located on Cerro Pachon in Chile. The Gemini project partners
include the USA, United Kingdom, Canada, Argentina, Brazil and Chile.
The Gemini project is operated by the Association of Universities for
Research in Astronomy (AURA) under contract to the National Science
Foundation. Companies who are interested in receiving the Invitation
