60 -- LARGE DEFORMABLE MIRROR DUE 100196 POC Gregory T. Rogowski Sr. Subcontract Administrator, (510) 422-8148 The University of California, Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory is currently in the initial design phase of the proposed National Ignition Facility (NIF) for the Department of Energy (DOE). This experimental facility will contain 192 laser beams. One component of each beamline is a large aperture (~40 cm x 40 cm square) deformable mirror. This mirror will have 39 actuators and will be able to deform its surface up to 4 microns in order to correct 2nd order aberrations of up to 15 waves at the laser wavelength of 1.05 microns when the beam makes two reflections off of the mirror. The mirror will operate with a controller of an existing design. Industry will produce 200 deformable mirrors for NIF over 3 years. LLNL is seeking companies having the expertise and infrastructure to carry out this work. Two companies are anticipated for selection to build one mirror each in 1997. A complete procurement package for these first mirrors is anticipated to be available for bid by November, 1996. A drawing package and performance data for a prototype mirror designed, built, and tested at LLNL will be available for companies who sign a non-disclosure agreement. The mirror is not constrained to be built to the aforementioned prototype drawings, and acceptance of the prototype drawing package is not required for a company to bid. Prospective sources should have personnel experienced in building adaptive optics and possess the personnel and equipment for fabricating and testing such mirrors. Provisions for the use of a LLNL mirror controller and/or test instrumentation can be negotiated. Interested companies should respond with a description of qualifications with respect to the foregoing or related fields. The small business size standard applicable to the proposed acquisition is 500 employees. Firms qualifying as a small business with respect to this standard should so state. Responses are required on or before October 1, 1996. Firms responding to this announcement which fail to provide the required information may not be considered for inclusion into any resulting source list. This notice is to assist the University in determining the potential for competition; no solicitation is currently available. (0243)
