The US Department of Energy intends to award a contract to Atomic Energy of Canada Limited (AECL) to provide technical support in all of the following areas related to the characterization of a proposed site for a deep geological repository for high level nuclear wastes: development and implementation of site characterization activities, integrating underground experimental programs with construction activities, field demonstration and testing of grout and sealing systems, materials testing, engineered barriers design, modeling long-term behavior of waste forms, waste package design and performance modeling, system modeling and performance assessment, development of biosphere models, tests of isothermal and thermally induced migration of radionuclides, integration of scientific and engineering information into an EIS, fracture dating techniques, controlled drill and blast, Electrical Resistivity Tomography (ERT) for in-situ measurement of moisture, diamond drilling and core logging procedures and tests of gas migration and isotopic exchange.
