201-627-9575, e-mail at apogozel@pica.army.mil. The US Army is seeking
sources of natural language machine translation software specifically
for English, German and Russian. Firms that possess such software are
encouraged to provide such software for the purposes of evaluation by
a group of liguists at the George C. Marshall Center for Security
Studies in Garmisch, Germany, such evaluation to result in a live
demonstration to be held on November 6 and 7, 1996 in the G. C.
Marshall Center. Demonstrations will cover translations between
English, German and Russian and should be limited to a one hour
presentation. It is the desire of the Government that software will be
provided, for the purposes of evaluation, at no charge to the
Government, or commitment (implied or actual) by the Government, for a
period of thirty (30) days, software to be installed on Government
owned or Contractor supplied system. All software so provided will be
returned at the completion of the thirty day period by the Government.
Two distinct types of software products are sought: 1. Machine
Translation (MT) software. Documents are fed to a computer through an
Optical Character Scanner/Reader (OCR), or manually if they are not in
an electronic form, translated by the MT program, and returned in a
different language. 2. Translation Memory (TM) software, e.g. glossary
and terminology management software. As the name implies, TM program
remembers previously translated terms and sentences by storing them in
a structed file similiar to a database and allowing to automatically
recycle translations in revisions and updates. Vendors who are
interested in coducting a demonstration must provide a description of
their capabilities no later than October 25, 1996 by fax or e-mail to:
