AMENDMENT The following notification is being circulated in accordance
with Article 10.6. G/TBT/Notif.96.337. 1. Member to Agreement
notifying: Canada. If applicable, name of local government involved
(Articles 3.2 and 7.2): 2. Agency responsible: Department of Transport.
Agency or authority designated to handle comments regarding the
notification can be indicated if different from above: 3. Notified
under Article 2.9.2. 4. Products covered (HS or CCCN where applicable,
otherwise national tariff heading. ICS numbers may be provided in
addition, where applicable): Motor vehicles. 5. Title, number of pages
and language(s) of the notified document: Proposed Amendment to the
Motor Vehicle Safety Regulations (Side Doors), (pages 2630-2637). 6.
Description of content: This Amendment was originally published in the
Canada Gazette, Part I, on 18 November 1995; however, in order to
better harmonize Canada's requirements with those of the United States,
substantive changes have been made to the proposal that necessitated
its republication. This Amendment would extend the requirements of
Section 214 (of Schedule IV to the Motor Vehicle Safety Regulations,
which is entitled ``Side Door Strength'') to trucks, buses, and
multi-purpose passenger vehicles (MPV) with a gross vehicle weight
rating of less than 4,536 kg. It would also harmonize Canada's
quasi-static side impact protection requirements with those of the
United States, which extended the applicability of its standard in
1993. As part of this initiative, Test Method 214-Side Door Strength
has been revised, and compliance with the updated version, dated 15 May
1996, would be mandatory. 7. Objective and rationale: Protection of
human safety. 8. Relevant documents: Canada Gazette, Part I, 7
September 1996. 9. Proposed date of adoption: Proposed date of entry
into force: Not stated. 10. Final date for comments: 6 November 1996.
