This is NOT a presolicitation notice pursuant to FAR Part 5, but is a notice of prequalification requirements that applicants must meet, at their own expense, to compete on future acquisitions. It has been determined that qualification before contract award is necessary on NSN 1005-01-351-6856, P/N: 12599987, Lightweight 20MM Gun Barrel applicable to the M61A2 Lightweight Gun. The estimated annual demand rate is a quantity of 201. The gun barrel is one of several critical parts on the M61A2 gun system. The gun fires at a rate of 100 rounds per second. To attain this high rate of fire the gun uses the ``Gatling Principle'' with six barrels rotating and firing in series. A 20mm round is chambered into the barrel by the breech bolt assembly. The chamber of the barrel must contain the forces, up to 60,000 psi, resulting from the detonation of the round. A rupture in the breech area of the barrel could cause serious damage to aircraft and injury to personnel. Consequently, the barrels are machined from rotary forged or hot-rolled steel which meets rigorous quality standards. The 20mm gun barrel is a very complicated part to manufacture and requires a substantial lead time to procure. Due to the lead time, it is imperative that prequalification requirements be imposed in order to alleviate any potential support problems. For these reasons, qualifications requirements pursuant to PL-98-585, Section 2319, have been established. Contract award is restricted to current qualified sources. Additional sources must be prequalified prior to contract award. It is estimated that it will take a potential contractor four weeks to respond to the capability submission requirements. It is estimated that it will take the government two weeks to evaluate the capabilities submission and respond to the contractor.
