III., Contract Specialist, (301) 594 - 8855 Dorann L. Penney,
Contracting Officer, (301) 594 - 7733. The National Institute of
Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases (NIDDK) has a requirement
for services to provide ''PROCESS PAYMENTS FOR AMERICAN INDIAN
VOLUNTEERS IN APPROVED MEDICAL RESEARCH.'' These volunteers are an
integral part of Phoenix Epidemiology and Clinical Research Branch
(PECRB) research related to non-insulin-dependent-diabetes and its
complications. For example almost fifty percent (50%) of adult Pima
Indians and more than twenty percent (20%) of adults in many other
tribes have diabetes. Therefore, the NIDDK's Phoenix Epidemiology and
Clinical Research Branch was established to study this high-risk
population. Since, the participation of American Indian Volunteers is
an essential component of the research project, the contractor must be
knowledgeable of and sensitive to the unique cultural characteristics
of this population and be experienced in dealing with American Indian
communities and governmental groups. The Phoenix Epidemiology and
Clinical Research Branch (PECRB) requires the service of a contractor
to make daily on-site payments to research volunteers at the Phoenix
Epidemiology and Clinical Research Branch (PECRB) Phoenix, Arizona
facility at the time of discharge. Immediate payment is recognized as
a strong motivational factor for participation in research protocols.
