COMMERCE BUSINESS DAILY ISSUE OF OCTOBER 30,1996 PSA#1711National Institute of Standards and Technology, Bldg. 101, Room A430,
Gaithersburg, MD 20899-0001 A -- PUBLIC MEETING SOL Q- DUE 112096 POC Tammie Grice (301) 975-3883,
Barbara Cuthill (301) 975-3273, Michael Nowak (301) 975-5196, Customer
Representative 1-800-287-3863 ATP PUBLIC MEETING: Component-Based
Software (CBS). December 11- 12, 1996, Sheraton at Fisherman's Wharf,
San Francisco, CA. About the Advanced Technology Program: The NIST
Advanced Technology Program (ATP) provides competitive, cost-shared
awards for industry to develop high-risk, enabling technologies with
broad-based economic benefit. The ATP seeks to help industry fill the
gap between basic research and product development, and to invest in
technology that wouldn't be developed in a competitive time-frame
without government cost-sharing. Along with general competitions which
are open to proposals from all technical areas, the ATP is also
funding a series of ''focused programs'' with specific business and
technical goals. Background: Since 1994, ATP has supported a focused
program in Component-Based Software (CBS). The purpose of this
multi-year, cost-shared ATP focused program is to accelerate the
development of high-tech, enabling technologies that will foster the
development of tools and infrastructure supporting a commerce in
software components. The goals of this program are to develop
technology supporting the development and automated composition of
semantic-based software components and thereby extending the
capabilities of customized software development to new groups of users.
ATP expects the achievement of the technical goals to lead to
substantial increases in software developer and user productivity.
Funded projects support the emergence of CBS as an important new
paradigm for the next century. Since ATP elected to fund this focused
program, the software market has evolved dramatically with the
emergence of the world wide web as a major force in the software
industry; the appearance of applets, ''plug-ins'' and other software
customization tools; and the development of visual programming and
other software development tools. These are only a few examples of
changes in the last two years which affect the emergence of markets in
component-based software critical to the ultimate ATP projects'
technical and commercialization efforts. This meeting will provide a
forum for the participants to discuss these business and technical
trends within the software industry and how the software industry might
evolve in the next five years. Meeting Goals and Agenda: The goals of
this workshop are to: discuss and communicate basic concepts and
methodologies for valuation of technologies, markets and companies,
discuss financing options for next stage corporate development with
fellow entrepreneurs, financial experts, and potential investors, =
discuss intellectual property protection strategies for software,
especially for licensing and export, = generate discussion and analysis
of trends potentially impacting the technical infrastructure and
ultimate commercial markets for the component-based software projects,
and = provide an opportunity for networking among CBS awardees and the
wider software industry. Location: The Sheraton at Fisherman's Wharf,
