Sozanski, 617/495-7376, FAX 617/496-7692 The Smithsonian Astrophysical Observatory (SAO) requires fabrication, assembly, and testing of two (2) Bezel/Bearing Assemblies and one (1) Bearing Spacer for the optical corrector for the Multiple Mirror Telescope (MMT), located in Amado, Arizona. The corrector contains three lenses and two Atmospheric Dispersion Compensation (ADC) prisms. Each ADC prism is mounted on its own integral bezel/bearing assembly due to space limitations. Each bezel/bearing assembly is approximately 0.8m (31.0 in.) in diameter and has a bearing cross section of approximately 2.5 cm x 2.5 cm (1.0 in x 1.0 in). Each of the two inner bezels (which support an ADC element) is connected to its outer race using a preloaded 4-point angular contact ball bearing. The two bezel/bearing assemblies are seperated with a bearing spacer located between the outer races. The inner bezels rotate, while the outer race and bearing spacer stay fixed. Prospective vendors also have the option to quote on manufacturing the ADC mounting flange, bearing retainer, and the two ring gears.
