99 -- MMT CORRECTOR CELL SOL RFP542-11-96 DUE 123196 POC Contracting Officer, Peter W. Sozanski, 617/495-7376, FAX 617/496-7692 The Smithsonian Astrophysical Observatory (SAO) requires the fabrication of a wide field optical corrector cell to allow the converted Multiple Mirror Telescope (MMT) to have a very large field of view for optical fiber spectroscopy and imaging with large CCD arrays. In the spectroscopic configuration, the corrector contains three lenses and two atmospheric dispersion compensation (ADC) prisms. In the imaging configuration, the third lens and ADC prisms are replaced with a different lens. The corrector cell structure consists of three distinct subassemblies: (1) a main support structure containing the first two fused silica lenses which are used in both lens configurations, (2) a subassembly containing the third fused silica lens and ADC prisms, rotating mechanism, bearings, motors etc., and (3) a subassembly containing the fourth fused silica lens. This design allows easy change over between spectroscopic and imaging modes. The first subassembly includes a cylindrical Invar cell with precision ground mounting surfaces that support lenses #1 and #2 and the steel main mounting flange; it is approximately 35.3 inches in diameter x 18 inches high. The second substructure includes a small cylindrical Invar cell that supports lens #3 and the steel ADC mounting flange and bearing retainer; it is approximately 35.3 inches in diameter x 9.3 inches high. The third substructure includes a cylindrical Invar cell that supports lens #4 and a steel mounting plate; it is approximately 35.3 inches in diameter x 3.5 inches high. All Invar material will be provided by SAO. Prospective vendors also have the option to quote on manufacturing the ADC mounting flange, bearing retainer, and the two ring gears. Only written or faxed requests (FAX #617/496-7692) received directly from the requester are acceptable. All responsible sources may submit an offer. No telephone requests for the solicitation package will be accepted. (0313)
